Supporting Children & Families in the Cowichan Region

Play Lot Event

Success By 6 and Aboriginal Success By 6 partnered with Cowichan Early Childhood Educators, Child Care Resource and Referral and Island Savings Credit Union to celebrate May is Child Care Month and the 10-year Anniversary of Success By 6.  Children and families participated in a day of outdoor creative play using natural and recycled materials.

The goal of PLAY-LOT-DAY was to offer children and families an opportunity to stretch their imagination and creativity with recycled materials.  The idea is to collect clean constructive recycling items that can be provided along with creative tools like paint, duck tape, glue etc. allowing children and families to build and to create together using their imagination and complex creative thinking.  When children are given the freedom to create they learn valuable skills such as problem solving and team work.  Many families and children of all ages participated in this 4-hour session of creative fun.  Several other Play Lot Events have since taken place in our community and future events are being scheduled.

Translating Robert Munsch

Translating the Robert Munsch book "We Share Everything" has been very popular within our Nations, and we have been able to share this book with many daycares, schools, families.  It also has inspired many other communities to come together and create their own with their local language.  We want to thank all that have been involved with this project, and most of all the amazing Elders that supported this book.

Family Meals Event

Success By 6 is part of the Networking For Families table.  Our Family Meals Project encouraged and supported healthy family meals. We celebrated the October fall harvest and held an event to support families eating together.  The goal of the Family Meals Events is to increase awareness of the importance and benefits of family meals throughout the community and to support and encourage families to eat together.  Approximately 58 people attended and shared a meal as well as participated in a fun evening filled with song, games and art.  Another Family Meals Event is scheduled for the month of February and will tie into  Family Day celebrations.

It’s Time Parent Gathering / Workshops

Success By 6 and Aboriginal Success By 6 hosted the 3rd annual Parent Conference on Saturday October 26th, along with community partners Island Savings Credit Union, Clements Centre Society, the Cowichan Communities Health Network, H’ulh-etun Health Society, Coast Salish Employment and Training Society, and our local Early Childhood Educators.  This year our theme was "It’s Time" which included all of the Success By 6 messaging, it’s time to play, to sing, to talk etc.  The conference had a very rich First Nations flavor and culture was shared throughout the day.  This full day gathering connected parents to each other and their community professionals, provided them with a variety of workshops, a keynote inspirational speaker, vendor displays and resources.  Parents were celebrated for the important job that they do!
