Supporting Children & Families in the North Peace/Northern Rockies

North Peace - Fort St. John

Our Success by 6 has developed a website www.familyfriendlycommunity.ca that is a virtual community, where families can connect with their ‘neighborhood’ and access community events, directory or services, community calendar, and training opportunities.

In alignment with National Family Day, the Northeast region hosts an annual event, Fort St. John Loves Families Week. We offer over 30 events throughout the week that are either free or low cost to celebrate the role families play in our community and give back to them. Local businesses participate as well by offering special promotions for families during the week.

Success By 6 works to enhance the lives of children and build communities. We have a community table, the Family Friendly Coalition which is made up of local Not for Profits, government and health authorities, striving to create a Family Friendly Fort St. John!

Northern Rockies

One of our larger projects in the Northern Rockies is the annual Preschool Health Roundup.  Each June we organize a free children’s health fair in partnership with service providers, Northern Health, School District 81, Northern Rockies Regional Municipality, local First Nations and the Fort Nelson Elks.  Children have the opportunity to have a vision, hearing, and dental screening, and consultation with occupational and physiotherapy, and speech professionals.  In addition to the very important screening opportunities community professionals are on hand to provide valuable information and resources.

To celebrate National Family Week, the Northern Rockies region organized a weeklong community celebration that brought families together.  We saw tremendous support from business, industry, local government and service providers in the community.  With their support we were able to offer free family centered activities that included family: swimming; skating; yoga; zumba; shinny; movie; dance and bbq; pumpkin carving; crib tournament; a red worm composting workshop, and a Fire Prevention Open House. The kick-off event saw huge participation from the community in the first annual Cultural Folk Festival.

The Northern Rockies region is proud to distribute a host of community resources free of charge to residents.  These resources include: the Directory of Community Services, the 24- hr Crib Side Assistance Manual for New Dads, emergency phone number magnets, the First Five Years booklet, and Raising a Healthy Child in Northern Rockies pamphlet.

The Northern Rockies region has a very active table of dedicated partners that are focused on supporting children and their families.  These dedicated professionals represent: Fort Nelson Public Library, Northern Rockies Regional Municipality, Ministry for Children and Family, School District 81, Fort Nelson Family Development, Fort Nelson Community Literacy Society, Encana Corporation, Nenan Dane zaa Deh Zona Family Services, North Peace Savings & Credit Union, Northern Health, and Fort Nelson First Nation.
