Supporting Children & Families in the North Okanagan
Our region consists of many rural and remote communities, some a short distance of twenty minutes apart and others a distance of five hours between communities.
In November, the City of Vernon invited all children to City Hall for Children in the City! Children in City Hall! to recognize National Child Day and to meet the Mayor and Councillors, spotlighting children as actively engaged citizens in the community.
In Golden, there is a community initiative to build a child care centre and representatives from the Province of BC recently visited to gain more information about the project.
In North and South Shuswap where many small communities have few resources and many children live on or close to the lake, the ECD committee provided summer swimming lessons in the lake with very high participation.
In Revelstoke, a Neighbourhood of Learning site was opened with a school, child care centre, Child Care Resource and Referral, indoor winter active play space, early literacy and many other family services integrated into one facility.
Our coordinators meet face-to-face two times per year, have conference calls 2-3 times a year and meet individually or in small groups whenever possible for events, education and networking.
